morale is impossible hell yeah because it’s fun LEM is there enough horsepower hello I could use another two 300 horsepower – really I’ll put a bigger smile on my face hey Nick behind us is the brand-new BMW m5 perhaps the most iconic BMW built well except maybe the m3 oh I don’t know about the m3 Roman because I think the m3 is a boys car real men drive the ultimate driving machine the m5 alright I’ll give that to you so what’s new Nick there’s a lot of new stuff on this car but BMW have taken five major risks with the new m5 and the question is have they risked enough and that is coming up right now on the fast lane car [Music] [Music] Nik as you know BMW m5 has always been classic rear-wheel drive German sedan sending all that torque and power into a tire shredding burnout but this m5 it’s all wheel drive go figure all Rome and I want to show you something inside while we can get this to a rear-wheel drive performance German driving machine about three simple steps Roman go into my vehicle then into your M setup and your MX drive setup and you can choose between two wheel or four-wheel drive and this is where you get your ultimate driving machine with rear-wheel drive so basically that’s like a drift mode absolutely number four and unless Roman is right here the transmission in the previous f10 m5 there was two options of transmission a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch 7-speed however in this new version of the m5 in the F 90 we’ve gone to this an automatic transmission this is an 8-speed with a torque converter Nick it’s serious yeah we’re back to the torque converter Roman is it first there’s only one way to find out we happen to be at a racetrack one and you take it out and see if you think it’s fun [Music] alright I’m in the brand-new m5 here on a racetrack now guys I don’t pretend to be a race car driver so I’m gonna give you my best impression of Paul who is a racecar driver I can tell you right away that I’m probably in over my head in this vehicle is this a little bit more engaging than a Hellcat well we’re about to find out see how this car handles it does seem very progressive the car has a lot of torque almost 600 pounds that comes in really handy when you’re accelerating hard the brakes oh my gosh very confidence-inspiring just cook that quarter certainly I opening gives you a lot more confidence if especially if you’re somebody like me who’s not used to flogging cars around racetracks brakes are phenomenal and there’s very little if any fade East I’m not feeling any I can feel the car doing a lot of magic to wrap power to the wheels that have traction there is a little bit of front-end plow when you are like that and that’s because once again we’re going former rear-wheel drive car to an all-wheel-drive car but it feels a lot smaller than it is it really does kind of shrink around you as you hit the racetrack of Italy passing an m3 and m5 and a mini Bob I do something a little bit and hit my m2 button oh yeah four-wheel drive sports traction control has now been disengaged so now I’m on my own my heart is thumping because if I hold this up it’s all on me all the other back and this company I found a lot more well is it possible hell yeah because it’s fun oh yeah does it make you want to go faster hell yeah is there enough horsepower hell no I can be used another to 300 horsepower to really put a bigger smile on my face I know that sounds crazy but I gotta tell ya in that world of Hellcats I could use a little more power but overall this is a fun furious latest cars what was that fun yeah that was a lot of fun is this car capable of tearing a track apart yeah this is outfitted with our all of our em performance parts so it’s got the carbon fiber kidney grilles carbon fiber side grills carbon fiber front splitter ‘s and Performance Suspension so you’ll see it’s lowered on the M Performance Suspension looks great it’s got the carbon fiber side blades as well underneath the side skirt and it’s got our titanium and Performance Exhaust too so it sounds really mean sounds great and it gives you some weight savings with that exhaust [Music] all sudden told with all the parts you’re looking close to about 18 to 20 grand latest cars Nik the number three big risk has to be all this technology that’s baked into this car I mean if you look over here I can control the suspension I can control the variable ratio steering I can even control the exhaust note and of course this car can appropriate power in various amounts to the front and to the rear wheels and the question is is this car driving itself or am I the one driving the car and there’s only one way to find out and that is to taking on the road [Music] so the question is how does it drive dude let’s take it for a ride yes the cool thing about a BMW m5 has always been that it’s the kind of car that you can take to the racetrack and yet on the weekday you can drive it to work or you can drive it to church with your family right I mean that’s what it’s the magic you can tell your wife hey I’m getting a family sedan for 100k right but it’s also a car that you can go home let’s just give it a little bit of torque you got it ready here we go yeah that’s the one oh yeah so three point eight and it’s two up there’s two of us yeah so it should be about a 3.5 car so I think you what I was slowing you down by 0.6 of a second I think my dinner was slowing me down [Music] [Applause] in general you know there’s a lot going on here right there is this kind of mixture of real and virtual buttons steering wheel certainly has a lot of buttons that you can choose from I do like the fact that the M 1 and M 2 buttons are now red and prominently displayed here so if you do want to go into smart mode quickly you can just hit that button how do you like this – layout it’s not my favorite I think the things I think I’m Way of a piano black yeah which is carbon fibre the common fiber is okay it’s very traditional the other thing is when the screen the spinner wasn’t like it was awful I’m not opposed this two things are like in the tech side of things is one is I really do like the virtual buttons because they come with amazing graphics so they look clean they look at you they almost look like this pitches pasted on a bunch of the inside the gauges which are virtual they’re really clean the graphics are sharp teeth the thin film transistor is really clean what I also like about this is that BMW have their preset buttons you can preset anything like not just the radio as a passenger I mean even when you’re doing zero to 60 I’m not uncomfortable yeah yeah it’s a very comfortable car there’s a lot of technology in place that make 600 horsepower very family-friendly there’s such a thing yes of course the best thing about this car is when you get into the beans right I mean that is just instantaneous there’s a tracker in front of me you know I could just boom-boom squirt there we go the one thing that I still don’t really feel coming through the steering wheel is a lot of road filled you know I’ve been changing it from m110 to an appointment the suspension I’ve been playing with the steering and all you really get is heavier or lighter you don’t get this early a lot of feel and that is the case with pretty much every modern car an electric steering you know when you have such things as variable ratio steering where basically the Queen is the amount of input you put into the steering wheel changes how much the wheel steer it makes for I think a less direct driving experience it does Ben knows there’s a lot of safer that’s right at high speeds you’re not likely to wander over three lanes one of the interesting features of the new m5 is right here check it out I can change how rapidly the gears shift by selecting up to three different options for kind of how hard and how fast the car shifts it is ultimately configurable is it too configurable well that’s why you have these two m1 and m2 buttons that you can pre-program to your particular likes or track needs let me ask you this it’s very important probably the most important question you’ve been asked mr. hero yes how much is happiness what it’s certainly worth $103,000 I’m gonna go there we’re down to number two on the list Roman and that is styling is this vehicle styled enough is the new m5 too conservative yes it has gold brake calipers quad exhaust adaptive lighting housing and that famous kidney-shaped grille which has been redesigned but where’s the fire-breathing dragon is this vehicle iconic enough but under the hood Nik is well it’s the same as the previous currency 4.4 liter twin-turbo v8 but now it puts out 40 more horsepower and 553 pound foot of torque and of course like we said no longer does this just power the front wheels it goes to all four wheels making this first Oh wheel drive m5 Nik the number one big risk has to be is 600 horsepower enough how many horse find you actually need in a car I mean it’s six hundred seven hundred and seven octets how much a Hellcat has it cost thirty thousand dollars less because this is about 100k plus it’ll have a top-end speed of 202 how fast is this bad boy look I have to tell you that the top speed in the United States is 80 miles an hour 85 is it yeah alright 85 miles an hour this vehicle does a hundred and eighty nine which is about a hundred more than you’re legally allowed to do how much speed you really need I think this is hitting it on the mark perfectly for the consumer well I know one thing Nick this is probably no make that definitely the last m5 that won’t have an electric motor it’ll be interesting to see where the m5 goes we should meet back here in 10 years time and find out how iconic this car now latest cars they’re not a new phenomena been around for decades but one of the best-selling in recent years has been this the Renault Zoe it’s been one of the most popular thanks to it’s very normal driving manners stylish design and options to buy the battery outright or hire it through a rental scheme and the Zoe has just been facelifted with very minor tweaks to the interior and the exterior new trims and colors but the big news is that you can now go further on electric power but before we talk to you about that let me take you around the interior now in here it look pretty modern when the Zoe was launched back in 2012 but of course we’re in 2018 now and it’s starting to feel well just a little bit dated a bit old especially look at this the seven-inch touchscreen the graphics do look a bit dated and the functionality is a bit clunky but all models do come with it and has sat-nav – which means you can navigate to charging points which is brilliant it feels quite well put together in here even if the plastic it does feel a little bit cheap and the storage well it’s pretty average I mean let’s take a look at this I mean and I have a feeling it is gonna fail yep unfortunately Oh No it fails the big bottle car buyer surprisingly for an electric car there’s quite a bit of choice on offer with this Zoe entry-level expression and nav gets the touch screen with sat-nav front electric windows climate control heated mirrors a keycard in place of a conventional key bluetooth and air conditioning dynamic nav adds 16-inch alloys all-round electric windows auto lights and wipers a leather steering wheel and parking sensors the new trim level is signal chav which throws in leather seats heated front seats a reversing camera and a bose stereo these models come with a battery hire scheme if you want to buy the batteries outright go for a model with an eye in front of the trim name and all cars come with a free seven kilowatts wool box for your home which can fully charge your Zoe in around seven and a half hours a clever chameleon charger that allows the Zoe to be charged using different power levels through the same socket a heat pump which can cool or heat up the car when it’s plugged in and a free three year subscription to z-e connect a remote monitoring of battery charging and range dynamic nav and a dynamic nav models and above also come with the Z II interactive app which allows you to control and schedule charging now overall there is pretty good space back here and that is because Renault have put the batteries under the floor of the front and the back seats the only slightly downside to this is it means that the floors raised which raises your knees so that means your legs are a bit unsupported so I can imagine over the course of a long journey that’s probably gonna be a little bit uncomfortable but generally there’s quite a lot of legroom enough space for my knees in front of me and enough space for my head and stuff quite strange they’ve put a little pocket at the backseat useful for putting magazines and things in however they’ve only decided to put it on one seat so this passenger doesn’t get one there’s also no armrests again not very comfortable however the plus side is you’ve got nice easy to reach isofix points now around at the boots and it is good news because the batteries are under the seat there’s no impacts on the boot room and you can’t say that for a lot of electric cars in fact there’s more space in here than there is in a renault clio and there’s quite a low load lips that makes it easy to put the bags in the only downside is there’s no 60/40 folding rear seat so if I show you here that actually the whole back seat has to move down as one which leaves my step in the floor so all that sounds good but if you’re interested in buying a Zowie you need to work out how you’re going to pay for it if you want to buy the batteries out right then you need to go for the eye expression nav eye dynamic nerve or eye signature nav models but if you quite fancy the idea of buying the car and then hiring the batteries go for a Zoe without an eye in its name battery higher ranges over six packages from fifty nine pounds a month for cars doing an annual mileage of four thousand five hundred miles or less 299 pounds for up to ten thousand five hundred miles for a hundred and ten pounds for unlimited mileage then once you’ve worked out how you want to buy your Zoe and its batteries there’s the choice of motor now the entry-level car only comes with a twenty two kilowatt battery pack called the on ninety this gives a range of 149 miles while the two higher trim levels come with an R 90 ZD 40 battery pack now this offers 40 kilowatts and a range of up to 250 miles not bad for the top spec Zoe there’s also the Q 90 is Eddie 40 quick charge version which can get eighty percent charge in just 65 minutes if connected to a forty three kilowatt roadside rapid charger no matter which Zoey you go for it is worth bearing in mind that you won’t ever reach the claimed a hundred and forty nine miles in the are 90 or the ZD 40s 250 miles real-world summer driving will see that drop to 106 and 186 miles respectively while cold wintry conditions will see that job even further to 71 and 124 miles respectively if you’ve never driven an electric car before well first of all clearly you’ve never lived but secondly you’ll be struck by just how quiet it is and the Zoe is particularly quiet for an electric car that is around town and went cruising on the motorway there is quite a lot of tire and wind noise but it’s not too bad the rights generally quite good there is the odd thump over potholes thanks to the heavy batteries weighing down the car but it’s not too noticeable one great thing about electric cars is that the power is always there whether you go for the 22 or the 40 kilowatts both versions have the same power output 87 brake horsepower and it feels quick enough the downsides well the Zoe is definitely not as involving or as fun to drive as a BMW i3 it’s got quite numb steering and the regenerative braking which harvests energy and puts power back into the battery it feels like grabby on the Zoe even for an electric car so there you have it the newly updated Zoe is a small but spacious electric car that’s comfortable quiet and relaxing to drive but not
